Sun Merchant and Johanna-Adele Jüssi trio
Johanna-Adele Jüssi plays a distinctive mix of Estonian-Nordic folk music, that weaves folk tunes with elements of Scandi jazz, vice pop and more experimental approaches. Jüssi’s fiddle and viola playing are warm and brilliantly engaging in all the styles explored here. The traditional hymn ‘Salmetone’ reaches back in time and creates new visions, the opening ‘Plan C’celebrates the humanity of folk music and who wouldn’t want to meet the mischievous ‘Helle & Magnus’. You don't need a lot of prior cultural knowledge, this is immediate music that hits right at the roots. Johanna-Adele Jüssi is an Estonian fiddler living far North in Norway. Together with her trio plays music from the Lynx Valley - a utopian place found in a dream. Her expression is both elegant and raw, it tells a story and weaves a spell. Whether she plays for dancing or listening, Johanna-Adele is always in the present, creating the moment, filling it with meaning. Fiddler Jüssi is coming to Ireland for a short tour in late September 2024, and will be performing with her trio that includes Bendik Lund Haanshus (guitars) and bass player Erlend Smalås
Sun Merchant is a genre-defying band that has been captivating audiences with their eclectic blend of alt-rock, blues, gypsy jazz, and Balkan music. Drawing from a diverse palette of influences, their sound is both familiar and refreshingly unique. Their lineup is a testament to their multifaceted approach, featuring a group of musicians whose backgrounds span various genres. Inspired by contemporary genre-bending bands that tend not be tied down by traditional instrumentation or genres, Sun Merchant crafts songs that are as complex as they are catchy. At a Sun Merchant show you are as likely to hear an electric guitar solo as you are to witness a double bass, djembe and oud lead jam. The band is currently recording their debut album, with plans to release a single very soon.
The band is comprised of Aurey Livingstone (Vocals, Guitar, Oud) Stephen McGrath (Electric Bass, Double bass) and Jaimie Ryan (Drums, percussions)
